MEG Energy Summer Science Camp inspires Aboriginal youth

At MEG, we believe that investing in education contributes to the long-term sustainability of the communities in which we operate. As strong proponents of inspiring youth, we are proud to sponsor the MEG Energy Summer Science Camp at Mount Royal University. pic1.jpg

Last summer, MEG’s support helped seventeen Aboriginal high school students travel to Calgary for a week-long extravaganza of learning. Designed to spark an interest in science and technology, the camp offered youth the chance to gain hands-on experience while enjoying campus life and having fun.

Industry leaders in the fields of science and technology offered their time to conduct various experiments, demonstrations, and field excursions in and around Calgary. The program also incorporated Aboriginal culture into the week’s festivities with Elders teaching the history of Alberta’s land and rivers. This unique learning experience enriched the students’ pic4.jpgunderstanding of the sciences and cultivated an interest in the pursuit of science-related education.

To help make this dream of post-secondary education a reality, MEG founded a scholarship to support and inspire Aboriginal students who wish to pursue an education in science or computer information systems. Extending this opportunity to the campers and encouraging their newfound passion was a great way to end an unforgettable week.

"Overall the camp was a huge success filled with memorable and perhaps even life changing moments," says Dwight Farahat, Mount Royal Camp Coordinator. "Getting to know these kids and uniting as one community, while learning about the sciences and Aboriginal culture, is an experience I'll never forget."
