Darlene Gates

President & Chief Executive Officer

Darlene is the President & Chief Executive Officer and a director of MEG Energy. She was the Chief Operating Officer of MEG from 2021. Prior to joining MEG in 2021, Darlene served as the President of ExxonMobil Alaska. She has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas sector, including global leadership roles. Darlene has progressed through many technical, managerial, financial and operating positions in Canada, US, Germany, and Qatar, leading to running Imperial Oil's Cold Lake asset, one of the largest thermal in-situ operations in the world. She holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Victoria and is a registered professional engineer in Alberta. Darlene is a member of the RCAF Command Advisory Council and 4 Wing's Honorary Colonel. She has also been on numerous charitable and industry boards.

Ryan Kubik

Chief Financial Officer

Ryan is the Chief Financial Officer at MEG Energy, with more than 30 years of corporate finance and strategy experience. Prior to MEG, Ryan served as Chief Financial Officer & Senior Vice President of Heritage Royalty as well as President and Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Canadian Oil Sands Limited. During that time Ryan Chaired Syncrude Canada's Board of Directors and Audit and Business Controls Subcommittee. Ryan is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Financial Analyst, and holds an Institute of Corporate Directors ICD.D designation.

Lyle Yuzdepski

Senior Vice President, Legal & Corporate Development

Lyle is the Senior Vice President, Legal & Corporate Development at MEG Energy. Prior to joining MEG in January 2020, Lyle was General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of the Mancal Group where he handled major commercial transactions in a broad range of industries and advised boards of directors and trustees in a variety of different contexts within the Mancal Group. Previous experience also includes his tenure with McCarthy Tétrault LLP as Partner. Lyle practiced general corporate and commercial law and securities law specializing in complex major transactions, including project development, public and private financings, acquisitions and divestitures, and private equity. Lyle graduated from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 1993 as the Gold Medalist. He is a member of the Bar Association of Saskatchewan and the Bar Association of Alberta and is a Certified Family Enterprise Advisor (FEA).

Dave Granger

Senior Vice President, Human Resources

Dave leads a team of passionate, innovative and talented Human Resources and Communications Professionals and is accountable for human resources strategy, talent acquisition, leadership and employee development, diversity, equity and inclusion, compensation and benefits, and HR operations. He brings over 30 years of human resources experience in the manufacturing, supply chain, beverage and oil and gas sectors. Prior to joining MEG in 2019, Dave was the Vice President, Human Resources with Pengrowth Energy. Dave is a Chartered Professional in Human Resources with CPHR Canada and holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of British Columbia. He also sits on the Board of Directors for carya, one of Calgary’s longest standing social impact agencies.

Erik Alson

Senior Vice President, Marketing

Erik Alson is Senior Vice President, Marketing for MEG Energy and joined the company in early 2020. Prior to working for MEG, Erik’s career was largely focused in the U.S. Downstream sector. He has nearly 30 years of deep refining experience, having been with Marathon, Tesoro/Andeavor, BP and Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO) since 1990. He has a proven track record of delivering gross margin improvement and increased business profitability through strong leadership, commercial focus, commitment to HSE values, change management and continuous improvement. Erik holds a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Irvine.

Tom Gear

Senior Vice President, Production

Tom is Senior Vice President of Production at MEG Energy with more than 25 years of experience in oil sands, petroleum refining, midstream and corporate leadership. Prior to joining MEG in 2021, he held a wide range of progressively senior roles at Suncor including in commercial development, commodity marketing & trading, project execution and operations management. Currently based in Calgary, Tom previously resided in Fort McMurray where he was active in the community as Chair of the Board for the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Keyano College Business Administration Diploma Advisory Committee. Tom holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta and is an alumnus of the 2015 Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference.

Jim Campbell

Vice President, Communications and External Relations

With 30 years of experience working in politics, government relations and communications, Jim brings in-depth understanding of external relations to his leadership role as Vice President, Communications and External Relations at MEG Energy. Prior to joining MEG, Jim was Vice President, Business Environment at the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) from 2018 to 2022, where he led all external affairs functions for the Association and was extensively involved in the industry’s work on the Impact Assessment Act. Before CEPA, Jim was a Vice President, Government and Community Relations at Cenovus from 2010 to 2017. Jim also served as Executive Director of the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta from 2007 to 2010. Jim has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Calgary.

Garth Castren

Vice President, Corporate Development & Strategy

Garth is the Vice President of Corporate Development & Strategy for MEG Energy. He is responsible for company’s strategy, supply chain, commercial and corporate development functions. Garth also holds an executive leadership role on the Pathways Alliance. Prior to joining MEG, Garth spent nearly 20 years in various upstream commercial, marketing, planning & analysis, business development, and strategy roles within ExxonMobil based in the United States, Qatar, and Angola. Garth holds a Master of Engineering Management from Dartmouth College and a Bachelor of Engineering Science (honors) from the Pennsylvania State University. 

Mike Dlugan

Vice President, Development

Mike is the Vice President, Development at MEG Energy, and brings more than 24 years of experience in the oil and gas industry experience. Prior to joining MEG in August 2023, Mike held progressively senior roles at Nexen and CNOOC North America including Vice President of Commercial, Marketing and JV Assets, and Vice President, Resource Development and Engineering. In addition, Mike served on the Board of Sultran Ltd from 2021 to 2023. Mike holds a Bachelor of Science (Mechanical Engineering) degree from the University of Saskatchewan, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Calgary. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Alberta and a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Mark Telang

Vice President, Engineering and Projects

Mark is the Vice President, Engineering and Projects at MEG Energy. Mark is responsible for providing surface engineering services to MEG’s business, and for delivering the capital projects that underpin MEG’s responsible and disciplined growth. Mark has more than 24 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. Prior to MEG, he held a variety of production-focused positions between engineering, projects, and operations through his time with Imperial Oil Resources, which also included international secondments to ExxonMobil Production Company in Houston, USA, and Mobil Producing Nigeria in Lagos, Nigeria. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Alberta.
